Heat Safety Tool
When you're working in the heat, safety comes first. With the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool, you have vital safety information available whenever and wherever you need it - right on your mobile phone.
HEAT INDEX POLICY
In effort to protect the health and safety of our
participants, the FYAA Board has issued a recommended procedure for the
determination of the Heat Index (a combination of Temperature and Relative
Humidity) and guidelines for football activities based on the reading of the
Heat Index. The Heat Index reading will determine the need for any necessary
modifications for football activities. The FYAA Board will make a decision
using guidelines below whether to make changes to any activities held that day.
Coaches then will make the necessary modifications.
Under 95 degrees Heat Index:
- Plenty of water provided at all times. Participants
should have unlimited access to water.
- Optional 10 minute rest and fluid break every 30
minutes.
- Monitor participants closely for any heat distress.
95 – 99 degrees Heat Index:
- Plenty of water provided at all times. Participants
should have unlimited access to water.
- Mandatory water breaks every 30 minutes for 10 minutes in
duration.
- Monitor participants closely for any heat distress.
· Helmets and other equipment removed while not involved in
contact.
- Re-Check Heat Index every 30 minutes to monitor for
increase.
100 – 104 degrees Heat Index:
Plenty of water provided at all times. Participants
should have unlimited access to water.
Mandatory water breaks every 30 minutes for 10 minutes in
duration.
Monitor participants closely for any heat distress.
Shorts and Shirts and helmets only.
Re-Check Heat Index every 30 minutes to monitor for
increase.
105 – plus degrees Heat Index:
Football activities cancelled.

Lightening Weather Policy
The
following FYAA policy is implemented to insure the safety of all participants,
coaches and public during times of lightning. It
applies to all outside football activities at practices, games or other
functions.
Authority of Making the Decision to Seek Safe Shelter (in order):
1.
FYAA Board President.
2.
Any FYAA Board member in attendance.
3.
Coaches that are in attendance.
Flash to Bang Method:
The
“Flash to Bang” Method will be used to determine if and when necessary to seek
safe shelter. The person making the decisions measures the number of seconds
that pass between when lightning is seen and when it is heard. It is necessary
to seek safe shelter when the time from “Flash to Bang” is thirty seconds or
less.
Return to Play/Activity Criteria:
The
“20 minute rule” will govern return to play/activity. Activity may resume no
sooner than 20 minutes after the last lightning strike is seen or thunder
heard.
FAIRFIELD YOUTH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION (FYAA)
Cold Weather Policy
FYAA Board Approved: 7/23/11 Football activities during
times of cold weather can place participants at risk for frostbite and
hyperthermia. Air temperature, humidity, wind, and wet/dry conditions are
contributing factors to body cooling. These factors need to be carefully
monitored to determine if any modifications must be followed.
1. If
the temperature and wind chill is 25 degrees, outside exposure will be limited
to 45 minutes.
2. If the temperature and wind chill is between 25 – 15 degrees, outside
exposure will be limited to no more than 30 minutes.
3. If the temperature and wind chill is 15 degrees or less, all outside
activities are cancelled.
Clothing should be layered to allow adjustments as activity level may increase
or decrease within practice which may elevate or decrease body temperature. All
extremities need to be covered. If raining, proper rain gear is important as
wet skin will increase the chances of hypothermia/frostbite.
